Dr. Andrea Ficchì has been awarded the AXA Research's Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship

Our Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Andrea Ficchì is one of the 8 laureates awarded the prestigious AXA Research Fund’s Postdoctoral Fellowship, in the AXA – UNESCO’s Ocean Decade joint call for Fellows aiming to advance science on coastal livelihood preservation & resilience. The grant will allow Dr Andrea Ficchì to conduct a 2-year research project titled:

“Strengthening coastal communities’ resilience through better forecasting and projecting compound flood risk”

Using machine learning techniques, the Fellowship project will seek to better predict compound flood risk and identify high-risk areas in order to strengthen anticipatory humanitarian action and crop insurance.

The long-term objective of the project is to contribute to building resilience of coastal livelihoods to compound flood hazards, bridging the gap between state-of-the-art climate services and policy-making. Key specific objectives will be assessing the skill of current flood forecasts and simulations, and enhancing forecasts and projections of coastal flood risk using Machine Learning methods. To demonstrate the value of the enhanced forecasts and projections for humanitarian actions and flood insurance, Mozambique will be the main case study, as it is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world and at high risk of compound floods.

Dr. Andrea Ficchì will be hosted in our Environmental Intelligence Lab at Politecnico di Milano and supervised by Prof. Andrea Castelletti. Collaborations and research visits will also involve world-leading institutions in climate services including the Universities of Bristol and Reading (UK), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and Deltares (the Netherlands), as well as the EU-H2020 CLINT Project consortium.
